Adoptions

Minimum Requirements  For Adoption:

  • Applicant must be at least 18 years old.

  • If applicant rents, landlord must verify that pets are allowed.

  • All pets in the home must be up to date on their rabies vaccine.

  • Out-of-state applicants  are welcome to apply   but must come to us to meet the animal.

Adoption applications are processed Monday through Saturday   and it typically takes  1-2   days to be    approved depending on how many applications we have waiting to be processed.   After you're approved, you will receive an email with information about setting up a meeting   so be sure to check your spam folder!   If you have any questions about your application or the adoption process, please contact  our Adoption  Coordinator  at adoptions@sftsrescue.org

As of 12/7/21 declawing is now banned in Madison, WI! - - Due to the medical and behavioral problems it can cause, such as lameness and litter box aversion, SFTS does not condone declawing and our adoption contract prohibits it. If you want a declawed cat,  please consider adopting one who has already been declawed. We are more than happy to talk to you about healthy   alternatives to declawing,  such as  nail caps and scratching posts, and can teach   adopters how to trim nails as well. If you're interested in learning more about declawing and the negative side effects it can cause, please  read Cat Declawing: The Price of Convenience.

Adoption F.A.Q.

I already have an approved application or have adopted from you in the past, do I need to submit another?  No!   Simply email or call to let us know which animal you're interested in    and if your email, home address, or phone number has changed.

Does SFTS conduct home visits?  Due to time restraints,   limited resources, and safety concerns,   we do not conduct home visits   nor do we ask for  pictures of your home.

Do you offer financial aid   or discounts to seniors, vets, and   low income individuals? SFTS is a non-profit that receives no state funding and relies solely on grants, donations, and adoption fees to operate,   so we're unable to offer  discounts at this time. However,  dog adopters who complete a training class within 4 months  will receive a $25 rebate (proof of completion required) and we are   more than happy to work with you  on overcoming financial obstacles.  Below is a list of  resources that may be helpful!

If you're a survivor of sexual assault, domestic violence, or  child abuse and suffer with a mental health disorder or PTSD, and you'd like to adopt but are struggling financially, the Embark Foundation can help cover your adoption fees.

Do you  offer animal licenses? No, please check out the following links for more information on licensing your pet in the state of Wisconsin: Franklin | River Falls |   Madison | McFarlandJanesvilleMilwaukee

What are your adoption fees? Depending on the breed and age, cats are $10-$106 and dogs are $238-$500.  Our adoption fees   include  each  animal   being spayed or neutered, microchipped, and up to date on vaccines. In addition, dogs are tested for heartworm and cats are tested for    FIV and FeLV.
