Minimum Requirements  For Adoption:

  • Applicant must be at least 18 years old.

  • If applicant rents, landlord must verify that pets are allowed.

  • All pets in the home must be spayed/neutered, up to date on vaccines, and seen for regular check-ups.

  • Nearby out-of-state applicants  are welcome to apply, but must come to us to meet and pick up the animal.

  • If you're applying to adopt a dog and already have one in the home, we require a dog introduction before adopting.

Due to the medical and behavioral problems it can cause, SFTS does not condone declawing and our adoption contract prohibits it. If you want a declawed cat,  please consider adopting one who has already been declawed. We are more than happy to talk to you about healthy    alternatives to declawing as well.

Adoption Application Process:
Adoption applications are processed Monday through Friday and can take up to a week to complete depending on how many we have and how quickly your references get back to us.   After you're approved, we will contact you via email to set up a meeting. Be sure to check your spam folder! The email will include a copy of our adoption contract for you to look over, which can be signed electronically at the time of adoption.  If we have not heard back from you within 3 days, your application will be put on hold. Make sure you have contacted your landlord, vet clinic, and references to let them know we will be in touch so that we can process your application as quickly as possible.

Adoption Meetings:
SFTS is considered a Working Shelter, meaning our facility is not set up to be open to the general public. If you're interested in meeting our adoptable animals, we    have availability Monday through Saturday  at the shelter   for approved adopters   by appointment only . We accept all forms of payment including cash, check, and card, but card is preferred.  If you are adopting a cat, please bring a cat carrier. If you are adopting a dog, please bring a collar or harness and leash. At the time of adoption, we will provide you with the animals medical records as well as coupons and information to help your new family member transition into their forever home.

If you have any questions, please get in touch with our Adoption  Coordinator at! For cat specific questions, please email our Cat Adoption Volunteers at!

I already have an approved application, do I need to submit another? If you've been approved within the past year, you do not need to submit another application. Simply send us an email letting us know which animal you're interested in.

I've adopted from you in the past, do I need to submit another application? If it has been longer than a year since you submitted your last application    or your contact information/ address has changed, please submit another application.

Does SFTS conduct home visits?  Due to time restraints,    limited resources, and for the safety of our staff, volunteers, and adopters,  we do not conduct home visits    nor do we ask for any pictures/videos of your home.

Do you offer any discounts?  SFTS is a non-profit that receives no state funding and relies solely on grants, donations, and adoption fees to operate    so we're unable to offer any discounts at this time.  However, adopters who complete a training class within 4 months of adoption will receive a $25 rebate. We also work with several stores who offer coupons and free products/services to new adopters if redeemed within 14 days.

Do you offer trial periods or foster-to-adopt? Due to limited resources    and for the safety of our animals, our organization is unable to offer these options at this time and we have no plans to start offering them.

What are your adoption fees? Depending on the breed and age, cats are $53-$106 and dogs are $238-$500.   We do not charge taxes. All of the animals in our    care  are spayed or neutered, dewormed, microchipped, up to date on vaccines,  tested for heartworm or FIV, given monthly preventatives, and receive any surgeries they may need    before going up for adoption. The care that they receive typically costs at least 2x their adoption fee.
